Australians Take a Cautious Approach to Black Friday
This year, over 10 million Australians are expected to participate in Black Friday shopping, but many are exercising greater caution in their spending. A Nature Sydney survey of 1022 Australians conducted in August 2024 revealed that 58 per cent of respondents plan to shop during the sales, consistent with last year’s numbers. Younger Australians, particularly those under 30 (63 per cent), report a shift toward prioritising essential purchases and budgeting more carefully.
Dylan Wilkinson, General Manager of International & Partnerships at TID, acknowledges the trend, stating:
“We’re aware travellers are becoming more careful with how they spend their money, so we’re pleased to offer this discount when budgeting matters most. This is the first time we’ve offered a discount as high as 20 per cent – it’s our way of helping Australians make the most of their holidays.”
Travel Trends and Spending Insights
Black Friday sales have historically driven significant spending among Australians, who shelled out a record $8.7 billion last year. While this year’s spending is expected to stabilise, travel insurance trends highlight strong interest in affordable, nearby destinations.
According to TID, Black Friday marked its biggest sales period in 2023, with destinations such as Bali (15.6 per cent), South East Asia (13.84 per cent), and Japan (10 per cent) leading the pack. Wilkinson anticipates these destinations will remain popular this year as Australians seek value-for-money travel options.
“We know Australians will be looking to make the most of Black Friday sales when considering cover for their next getaway. This year we expect these nearby, affordable destinations to be popular again as people continue to seek more value for money,” Wilkinson said.
