Talking Travel with Eamonn Merrifield from Travel Monitor

Eamonn Merrifield has joined Travel Monitor as a travel writer, bringing his expertise in travel to deliver news stories, features and inspirational travel stories to the Travel Monitor audience.

When not exploring, you’ll find Eamonn based in his adopted hometown of Adelaide, cooking tasty food, drinking world-class wines, hiking trails and scuba diving.

During his career to date, Eamonn has worked in a variety of industries including environmental, governmental tourism, retail and not-for-profit with many different hats across leadership, technology & sales.

Eamonn says “Joining the team at Travel Monitor allows me to engage the creative side of the brain and to put more places into the growing bucket list of travel destinations. I’m looking forward to providing articles that can help the travel industry”

Eamonn adds to the growing Travel Monitor team, with Sarah Clements recently appointed as the Sales and Campaign Manager alongside the Editor, Kate Webster.

Find out what else they had to say in this week’s Talking Travel.

What has been your favourite travel memory to date?

There’s been so many over the years but two that stand out as amazing memories would be: When scuba diving in Truk (Chuuk) in Micronesia and playing with a pod of oceanic dolphins who came to say hello followed by the experience of going through the darkened passageways of a large sunken ships. The other is from Peru where me and some friends were sitting in a hot spring in the mountains (see it here) at night, surrounded by the Andes and wondering at the expanse of stars in the dark sky.

Where are you travelling to next?

Vanuatu in December. It’s my first visit there and I’m very excited!

What destination is next on your hit list and why?

Oh, big question. Japan is always a place that has intrigued me but there’s probably 20 others I could name. The dolomites, The Philippines, Costa Rica, New Zealand, the list is endless.

If you had unlimited time and budget, where would you go?

I’d love to take a long trip through Central & South America, to experience the different cultures, and so I could practice my Spanish

What are your top 5 must-travel with items?

I’m a very light traveller, generally there are shops locally and I like to support them so if I forget something I’m not too concerned. If I had to list 5 I’ll say, A toothbrush, comfortable multipurpose shoes, a way to get to emergency cash, a Kindle for long transit entertainment and some quality headphones.
