HX (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions) has unveiled a groundbreaking collaboration with the University of Tasmania’s Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) to launch a first-of-its-kind educational program for Antarctic travellers. Starting in the 2024-25 season, the program blends immersive learning with real-world exploration, giving HX guests and expedition staff an unparalleled opportunity to deepen their understanding of Antarctica.
The collaboration marks a major milestone, bringing together one of the world’s oldest expedition companies and a globally renowned institute for Antarctic and polar research. The University of Tasmania, based in Hobart, is recognised for its excellence in marine science and sustainability studies, making it a perfect partner for HX’s mindful expedition ethos.
HX has long supported Antarctic research, hosting over 30 scientists and university students on polar expeditions in recent years and providing more than 1,800 free cruise nights annually for scientific research. This new program strengthens that commitment by integrating cutting-edge academic insights into the expedition experience.
An Innovative Educational Experience
Launching as a pilot later this month, the HX Pre-Departure Course offers participants a unique journey into the science, history, and governance of Antarctica. Developed by academics at IMAS and the University of Tasmania, the course covers topics including:
- The history of human activity in Antarctica
- The Antarctic Treaty System
- Wildlife and ecological communities
- Ice core studies and climate science
- Citizen science initiatives
- Responsible travel in polar regions
The program combines online seminars, expert interviews, and live Q&A sessions. Guests can access the roughly four-hour course before, during, or after their Antarctic journey. Upon completion, participants will receive an official University of Tasmania certificate.
Benefits for Guests and Staff
The course is available at no additional cost to HX guests, providing an enriching layer to their travel experience. Expedition staff will also benefit from access to the course, making HX the only expedition cruise company to offer a tailored Antarctic education program for its employees.
Dr. Verena Meraldi, HX’s Chief Scientist, explained the significance of the program, saying, “This world-first initiative enriches our guests’ travel experience with scientific education and inspiration. It’s a unique opportunity for curious travellers to deepen their understanding of the regions they explore while contributing to global sustainability efforts.”
Advancing Sustainability and Mindful Travel
The collaboration aligns with Tasmania’s T2030 Visitor Economy Strategy, which emphasises sustainable tourism and partnerships with organisations like Tourism Tasmania and the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service.
Tudor Morgan, HX’s VP Sustainability, Guest Learning and Industry Relations, highlighted the broader impact, saying, “Together with the University of Tasmania, we are bridging the worlds of exploration and academia. This partnership empowers both our guests and our expedition teams with transformative knowledge, supporting ocean conservation and sustainable tourism.”
