Destination NSW and Tourism Australia welcomed 114 travel agents from Hong Kong on Friday ahead of the Hong Kong Association of Travel Agents’ 46th Annual Overseas Convention in NSW – the first time the association has held such an event in Australia.
“We are delighted the Hong Kong Association of Travel Agents will host their first Australian convention in NSW, during which they will explore a range of key Sydney attractions, as well as visit the stunning Blue Mountains and the picturesque Hunter Valley,” said Minister for Tourism Stuart Ayres.
“Visitation from Hong Kong to NSW is continuing to flourish. Between March 2014 and March 2019, the total number of visitors from Hong Kong to our State grew by nearly 35 per cent with expenditure up by more than 41 per cent.
“By experiencing our State’s wonderful experiences and attractions first-hand, this visiting delegation provides a unique opportunity to showcase Sydney and NSW to potential visitors from Hong Kong.”
Federal Tourism Minister Simon Birmingham said this was a great opportunity for Sydney to strengthen its ties with such an important tourism market.
“Hong Kong is Australia’s ninth largest tourism market, worth $1.36 billion to our economy each year.
“Australia continues to strengthen our reputation as a sought-after business events destination. Business events are an extremely valuable part of our country’s tourism industry with an average business events visitor spending at least twice as much as a leisure visitor.
“This event provides NSW a great opportunity to highlight its incredible tourism offerings and inspire these agents to sell Australia to their customers back home.”
