Hobart’s Islington Hotel unveils refurb

Hobart’s iconic Islington Hotel has embarked on a new chapter of luxury and heritage, with a meticulously crafted refurbishment unveiled on 14 November 2024. This heritage-listed boutique property, dating back to 1847, has been reimagined to offer a refined guest experience while preserving its rich historical essence.

Nestled in South Hobart, the Islington Hotel’s transformation enhances its 11 uniquely designed suites and shared guest spaces. Each suite features original artwork, opulent fabrics, and large windows framing breathtaking views of Mount Wellington. The bathrooms have been outfitted with heated floors, marble rain showers, and deep bathtubs, marrying comfort with timeless elegance.

The newly revamped Loft Suite showcases a harmonious blend of modern and historical design elements. At its heart is a bespoke king-sized bed handcrafted by A.H. Beard, Australia’s oldest bedding manufacturer, based in southern Tasmania.

Spaces to relax, dine, and celebrate

This adults-only retreat offers tranquil spaces for leisure or business, including the Library, Conservatory, Morning and Games Rooms, and beautifully landscaped gardens. The Library, adorned with antiques and artwork, features a 19th-century mahogany dining table, perfect for intimate dining experiences for up to 10 guests.

Art lovers will appreciate the curated collection of pieces from Europe, Asia, and Australia, including works by renowned artists such as David Hockney, Brett Whiteley, and Matisse.

The hotel’s restaurant has also undergone a transformation, offering a warm, inviting atmosphere with glass walls that frame the gardens and Mount Wellington. Executive Chef Anthony Illingworth leads the kitchen, crafting a modern Australian menu that highlights the finest Tasmanian produce. The seasonal dishes celebrate the region’s land and sea, complemented by an extensive wine list.

A legacy reimagined

The refurbishment, led by La Vie Hotels & Resorts, builds on the Islington’s legacy as a member of the prestigious Small Luxury Hotels of the World collection. The aim was to preserve the hotel’s heritage while introducing thoughtful modern touches.

“Our goal was to preserve the essence of Islington’s heritage while enhancing the guest experience with thoughtful modern touches,” said Marcus Hanna, Chief Operating Officer of La Vie Hotels and Resorts. “The Islington is more than just a place to stay. It’s a destination where past and present meet to create something truly special.”

A venue for unforgettable occasions

The Islington’s revamped spaces also provide an idyllic setting for weddings, corporate retreats, and exclusive events. The blend of grandeur and intimacy ensures each occasion is as memorable as the hotel’s surroundings, offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere that leaves a lasting impression.

The Islington Hotel invites guests to explore this new era of heritage and luxury, where history and modern refinement come together to create an unforgettable experience.
