Government launches data dashboard to track tourism growth

The Albanese Labor Government has unveiled an innovative data dashboard designed to measure and monitor the progress of Australia’s tourism industry across economic, environmental, social, and institutional indicators.

The tool, known as the LIVE Framework (Longitudinal Indicators for the Visitor Economy), provides unprecedented insights into the broader health and sustainability of Australia’s visitor economy.

Revolutionising tourism metrics with comprehensive insights

Traditionally, tourism has been assessed using visitor numbers, spending, and employment data. The LIVE Framework expands on these metrics, enabling businesses, researchers, and policymakers to delve into deeper aspects of the industry. This interactive, user-friendly dashboard delivers timely and accurate information, empowering stakeholders to make better-informed decisions that support the sustainable growth of the tourism and travel sector.

The initial release includes 21 indicators, covering topics such as international flight capacity to Australia, perceptions of accessibility for travellers, and tourism-related greenhouse gas emissions compared to other nations.

Supporting the goals of THRIVE 2030

The development of the LIVE Framework aligns with the THRIVE 2030 national strategy for the tourism and travel industry, which emphasises the need for better and broader metrics to guide the sector’s sustainable development. By quantifying tourism’s contribution across a range of dimensions, the Framework enhances the ability of businesses and governments to make data-driven decisions that benefit the economy, environment, and communities.

A game-changer for tourism planning and research

Tourism Research Australia, the agency behind the dashboard, describes the LIVE Framework as a tool that will transform how the visitor economy is analysed and supported. The dashboard is accessible to industry professionals and policymakers, offering insights to identify trends, benchmark performance, and shape future strategies.

Tourism stakeholders are encouraged to explore the new LIVE Framework and integrate its data into their operations.

The LIVE Framework dashboard can be accessed via the Tourism Research Australia website: LIVE Framework Dashboard.
