The Premier of Victoria, Daniel Andrews, confirmed yesterday that from 6pm [AEST] last night (2 August 2020) Melbourne has entered a six-week Stage 4 lockdown. Declaring a State of Disaster, in the wake of the state’s escalating battle to contain COVID-19 community transmission, Premier Andrews outlined the restrictions that will now apply to people in each of the 31 Metropolitan Local Government Areas (LGA).
The Premier said the State of Disaster gives police greater power to enforce restrictions, and permits authorities to suspend acts of Parliament.
From 8pm [AEST] last night, people in those LGAs are also under a nightly curfew until 5am [AEST] each morning. The curfew restricts all but essential travel and requires everyone to remain in their homes between 8pm and 5am, with exemptions only for work and essential health, care or safety reasons.
“Anybody breaking that curfew, you run the risk of being caught and run the risk of being fined and we always reserve the right not just to fine you on the spot but to take you to court and then it’s not $1,652, it’s actually $10,000,” Mr Andrews said. “This will be over sooner if everyone does the right thing and plays the part they have to play. I’ve said it many times, I don’t want the amazing selfishness of some to detract from the amazing work millions are doing.”
