The cost of mandatory 14-day hotel quarantine, previously covered by respective state governments (and taxpayer funded), are set to be passed onto returning citizens and visitors, with Queensland starting the ball rolling from 1 July 2020. The Queensland government has covered hotel quarantine costs for over 6000 international arrivals thus far, at over $19 million to date.
The Queensland government will continue to cover security costs for hotels, as well as transport and logistics, but travellers will be paying $2800 for a single adult, $3710 for two people twin share, and a family of two adults and two children will be required to pay $4620, for the 14-day hotel stay, inclusive of three meals per day.
The rates equate to $135 per room per night, plus $65 per day for meals for one adult and half price for meals for children.
The amendments to Queensland’s Public Health Act also include provision for a hardship scheme, to be announced prior to the 1 July 2020 start date for travellers to cover their own mandatory 14-day hotel quarantine costs.
