Eclipse Travel reports that demonstrations have been carried out in Santiago, Chile over the past few days, with a curfew put in place from 10pm to 7am yesterday. Public transport is affected by the protests, which are in response to a rise in ticket prices.
DFAT’s Smartraveller has raised its level of advice as at 21 October 2019, for Santiago, Valparaíso, Chacabuco, Concepción, Coquimbo, La Serena, Puente Alto, Rancagua and San Bernardo to exercise a high degree of caution. A state of emergency is in place for the capital region and areas of Valparaiso, Concepción, La Serena, Coquimbo and Rancagua.
Eclipse Travel is working closely with its partners on the ground to monitor the situation and ensure all clients are kept clear of affected areas and disruption is minimised. Travellers should expect delays and potential itinerary changes to avoid demonstrations, and airline schedules are affected.
Any agents with passengers travelling to Santiago, Valparaiso or Concepcion in the coming days are urged to contact Eclipse Travel on 1300 575 752 or enquiry@eclipsetravel.com.au for an update and keep an eye on the SmartTraveller website.
“Client safety is our top priority and we have been in constant contact with our operators on the ground to ensure all passengers are aware of the situation and alternative arrangements have been organised where necessary,” said Eclipse Travel’s Matt McMillan. “We have representatives at Santiago Airport to assist arriving and departing passengers whilst transport remains affected and will continue to do so until the situation clears up.”
