The crew and guests on board Viking Sun have donated USD$50,000 worth of food, clothing, shoes, linen and other supplies to the victims of Cyclone Idai in Maputo, Mozambique.
Those travelling on the ship, which is currently sailing Viking’s 2019 128-day World Cruise itinerary, began to collect items to contribute at the beginning of April. Following Viking Sun’s inaugural visit to Madagascar, she called on Maputo on 11 April, where 15 pallets piled high with donations were unloaded and presented to Red Cross aid workers.

Among the donations were hundreds of baby hats, hand-knitted by a dedicated group of Viking world cruise guests. A local charity organisation and children’s hospital representative personally accepted the generous contribution.

Cyclone Idai was one of the worst tropical cyclones on record to affect Africa and the Southern Hemisphere, causing catastrophic damage in Mozambique in early March. Thousands of Mozambicans were displaced by the disaster and left in desperate need of food, clean water, shelter, clothing and other essential items.
