Sponsored by Quark Expeditions, the Inspiring Explorers team of Laurette Siemonek, Ihlara McIndoe, Sadra Sultani, Anzac Gallate and Owain John, will begin an astonishing expedition in March, as part of the Antarctic Heritage Trusts.
The Expedition will explore the Antarctic Peninsula by ship, with the opportunity for kayak excursions in Antarctic waters. The team will travel with Expedition Partner, Quark Expeditions, via ship from South America across the famed Drake Passage to and from Antarctica.
This Expedition offers participants an incredible opportunity to challenge themselves by embracing the spirit of exploration in the world’s most extreme environment. The team will experience the spirit of the early polar explorers; a remarkable legacy the Trust cares for on behalf of humanity.
Participants will connect with experts to learn about the history, science, wildlife and the environment of Antarctica.
Representing Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate (SEHC) in Otara, South Auckland, as part of an ongoing partnership, are Inspiring Explorers Jaylee Savage and A’aifou Potemani (both Year 13), along with Deputy Principal Shauna Eldridge.
New Zealand white water kayaker Mike Dawson will join the Trust’s team as a mentor. Mike is a two-time Olympian and has supported young people through his role as an Olympic Youth Ambassador as well as on our 2019 Inspiring Explorers’ Expedition.
The team will be led by the Trust’s General Manager Commercial and Partnerships Marcus Waters, who 20 years ago completed the southernmost sea kayaking journey traversing the length of the Antarctic Peninsula, over 850 kms. A small group of Official Supporters will also join the journey.
